Trauma-Focused Therapies

These modalities are specifically designed to address Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder and related mental health symptoms that result from traumatic experiences. They have been extensively researched and shown to lead to significant reduction in PTSD and related symptoms for many clients who engage in them.

Cognitive Processing Therapy (CPT): This is a cognitive-behavioral therapy that consists of about 12 individual sessions. You will learn about the symptoms of PTSD and why some people develop it. You will also identify and explore how your trauma or traumas have changed your thoughts and beliefs, and how some of these ways of thinking may keep you “stuck” in your symptoms. CPT does not involve repeatedly reviewing the details of your trauma(s), however, you will be asked to examine your experiences in order to understand how they have affected your thoughts, feelings, and behaviors.

Eye Movement Desensitization & Reprocessing (EMDR): This is an extensively researched, effective psychotherapy method proven to help people recover from trauma and other distressing life experiences, including PTSD, anxiety, depression, and panic disorders. EMDR therapy does not require talking in detail about the distressing issue or completing homework between sessions. EMDR therapy, rather than focusing on changing the emotions, thoughts, or behaviors resulting from the distressing issue, allows the brain to resume its natural healing process.
