Your therapy at Effective Foundations is almost certain to include more than just one of these modalities, as people are complex and often need a variety of intervention styles to fully meet their therapeutic needs. Part of our training as therapists is to understand what modalities might best meet a particular person’s needs, and how to intertwine the modalities so that your therapy experience feels wholistic. Please let your therapist know if there is a specific modality that you definitely do, or do not, wish to try.
Mindfulness
Interventions
Learning mindfulness practices can greatly enhance a client’s awareness of their physical, emotional, and thought patterns, which provides an important foundation for identifying what areas most need addressing in treatment. Mindfulness skills also help clients develop more ability to focus on those internal experiences that are most helpful, while letting go of those that are not. Furthermore, increasing one’s mindfulness skills helps to lower stress, increase one’s sense of well-being, and improve decision-making. Breathing and body-focused practices are among the most common types of mindfulness practices used in therapy.
Cognitive-Behavioral Therapies
These modalities help clients identify and understand problematic thought and behavior patterns and learn how to shift these patterns into ones that help them reduce suffering, achieve desired goals, and improve their quality of life.
Dialectical Behavioral Therapy (DBT): This is a specific type of cognitive behavioral therapy that focuses on building distress tolerance, emotional regulation, and interpersonal skills.
Schema Therapy: This modality helps clients dive deeper into longstanding problematic core beliefs, often originating in childhood, that have kept them stuck in unhelpful emotional, social, and decision-making patterns. Clients will learn how to identify these patterns and develop more helpful thought and behavioral responses to them.
Trauma-Focused Therapies
These modalities are specifically designed to address Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder and related mental health symptoms that result from traumatic experiences. They have been extensively researched and shown to lead to significant reduction in PTSD and related symptoms for many clients who engage in them.
Nutritional & Integrative Therapy
This type of therapy addresses how nutrition, supplements, digestion, circadian rhythms, movement/exercise, and other body-based factors can impact both mental illness and emotional well-being. Any recommendations made in this modality are based on solid research connecting physical conditions with mental health.
Transpersonal Therapy
This method of therapy takes into account that our well-being and sense of self often extends beyond just the personal to include a greater sense of connectedness to others, nature, spirituality, and realms beyond complete understanding. If this is an important part of your experience or something you want to explore more, transpersonal therapy would be a good match for you.
